Shop

Given the delicate and fragile nature of our handmade pottery and one of a kind items, we'd prefer to avoid shipping (unless a last resort) items via the mail. Below is a small sampling of some of the pieces you could expect to see if you are able to visit the shop.

MWP features Pottery that is fired in a variety of techniques. They all require two firings. First is the bisque fire. (This takes from 7 to 11 hours in an electric kiln.) Below are descriptions of the firings that follow:

  • Electric kiln, cone 6 glazes are all food safe. It may be used for oven, and/or microwave cooking. These pieces come in matte and glossy glazes. These glazes are all lead free. (7 to 9 hours)
  • Gas kiln, cone 10. These are fired to a much higher temperature and are also food safe. These pieces are more difficult (but possible) to break. They are beautiful and useful.(Approximately firing time; 1 1/2 days)
  • Pit firing, The process is more complex than the above mentioned pieces. There is no glaze involved. Instead, a variety of chemicals, straw, pine needles, sawdust, wood, tin foil, horse hair and other organic materials are fumed (burned) onto the pottery, in a large, fire brick lined pit...outside. The firing and cooling process takes approximately 24 hours. These pieces are NOT food safe, but are lovely in a “Painted Desert” kind of way.
  • Raku, This firing technique takes place outdoors in a Raku kiln. (This is a shorter firing, using intense heat, tongs, saw dust, shredded paper and metal pails or trash cans). These pieces are not food safe. They range in appearance from very shiny, effervescence, to a white crackled glaze.

Regardless of the technique, all of our pieces are unique, bearing the Artist’s signature and the year that it was created.
